What is a Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC) ?
The Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC) is a designation of the British Columbia Association of Clinical Counsellors. This title is not won easily. To become a RCC, a Master of Arts in psychotherapy is required, as well as an intensive multi-year practicum and internship. RCC therapists are also held to strict ethical standards, and meet regularly with other mental health professionals for mentorship and accountability. In addition to giving you confidence in their ability, the RCC designation means Evergreen Counselling Group therapists qualify for many insurance plans. Depending on your provider, your counselling visit may be partially or fully covered by your insurance plan.
Why is Certification Important?
In Canada, there is no legal restriction on who can call themselves a “counsellor.” Because anyone can call themselves a counsellor, it is important to pick a counsellor with a professional organization behind them. For example, someone who has the Registered Professional Counselling designation can have education that does not require a Bachelor or Masters degree, and can be completed in as little as one year. In contrast, the Registered Clinical Counsellor status mandates a minimum of a 2-3 year Master of Arts degree, on top of a 4-5 year Bachelor of Arts degree. When you choose a Registered Clinical Counsellor, you can be sure that you can have confidence in their experience and qualifications.
How Can a Registered Clinical Counsellor Help?
By choosing a Registered Clinical Counsellor, you can be assured of three things. First, that they have the highest levels of education and experience in the psychotherapy field. Second, that they adhere to strict ethical guidelines, giving you peace of mind. Finally, all RCC therapists are bound to a fixed limit in terms of the price charged for counselling – and often qualify for insurance plans as well. If you want a counselling option that is generally affordable, choose an RCC therapist. If finances are a struggle for you, we want to be able to help.
