What is Grief Counselling?
Grief can take many forms. Sometimes it stems from the sudden loss of someone that was close to you. It seemed like the person would be in your life forever, and now they are gone. Other times it comes after watching someone struggle with a fatal illness. The pain of loss was stretched out over years as you watched them slowly fade away. Regardless how it happens, losing someone who is close to you is not easy. Emotions come in waves, and that is okay – they are a reminder of how much that person meant to you. That is where grief counselling comes in.
Sometimes grief comes in the form of a loss of identity. It could be a physical disability that keeps you from doing the activities that you love. It could be in losing a job that gave you self-esteem and a sense of purpose. It could also come after your own terminal diagnosis – a grieving of the life that you will no longer be able to live. Finally, it could be the pet that provided you so much joy and love over its life. No matter what form your loss takes, it is important to process it.
How Can Grief Counselling Help with Loss?
Regardless of the reasons or cause of your loss, it is deeply impactful. There is no right time to stop feeling grief. It is important that you give yourself time to process the emotions that you are going through. Grief counselling is one way that this processing can take. It starts with a safe space for you to share your emotions – no filter needed. Together the counsellor and the counselling participant will talk about the loss and why that person or object was so important to them. Then, they will work together to come up with a way that you can continue to live your life in a way that is honouring of your loved one. Together you can chart a path the preserve the legacy of this amazing person.
